The problem of victimizing women is widespread in India and has serious consequences. Notwithstanding legislation aimed at ending violence against women, there are many difficulties that female victims encounter within the criminal justice system. This essay examines the idea of rehabilitating victims in India’s criminal justice system with specific reference to the empowerment of women. A doctrinal research method is used to critically evaluate current laws, and practices on victim rehabilitation while identifying loopholes and areas for improvement. The findings draw from global models thus making recommendations on what should be done so as to make Indian criminal justice systems more responsive towards addressing female rehabilitative needs thereby advancing gender equality, access to justice, and socio-economic development.
