Title

The Role of Code-Switching in Multilingual Classrooms: A Pedagogical Perspective

Abstract

Multilingual classrooms present unique opportunities and challenges for language education. One common linguistic phenomenon in such settings is code-switching—the practice of alternating between two or more languages within a conversation or utterance. Far from being a linguistic flaw, code-switching is a strategic, context-sensitive tool that enhances comprehension, expression, and classroom inclusivity. This paper explores the types, functions, and pedagogical implications of code-switching, emphasizing its value as a resource in language acquisition, classroom management, and learner identity construction.
