Banks play an important role in the economic development of a country. Banks are growth drivers and the banking business is exposed to various risks, such as credit risk, liquidity risk, interest risk, market risk etc. Apart from these risks, the very important risk is loan recovery.NPAs in loan portfolios affect operational efficiency which in turn affects the profitability, liquidity and solvency position of banks. The high level of NPAs in Indian banks is a reflection of the state of health of the banking industry and trade. It is necessary to trim down NPAs to improve the financial health in the banking system. An attempt is made in this paper to understand NPA, the status and trend of NPAs in Indian Scheduled commercial banks, the factors contributing to NPAs, reasons for the high impact of NPAs on Scheduled commercial banks in India and recovery of NPAS through various channels
