Rapid urbanization, population growth, and increased vehicle ownership have intensified transportation challenges in modern cities, including traffic congestion, air pollution, road accidents, and inefficiencies in mobility management. Traditional transportation systems are increasingly incapable of addressing these issues sustainably. In this context, Smart Transportation Systems (STS), supported by emerging digital technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data analytics, cloud computing, and intelligent communication networks, offer a transformative solution. This research article examines the concept, architecture, enabling technologies, applications, benefits, and challenges of smart transportation systems in future cities. The study highlights how intelligent mobility solutions can enhance traffic efficiency, reduce environmental impacts, improve safety, and support sustainable urban development. The paper concludes by emphasizing policy support, infrastructure readiness, and technological integration as critical success factors for implementing smart transportation in future smart cities.
