This study examines the repayment performance of microfinance borrowers in Assam, India, focusing on the determinants of repayment behavior at the individual borrower level. The research utilizes field-based evidence from 414 members across 187 Joint Liability Groups (JLGs) and Self-Help Groups (SHGs). A Tobit regression model is employed to analyze the impact of 15 explanatory variables on the cumulative repayment rate. The study finds that peer monitoring and peer pressure significantly positively influence repayment rates, while access to alternative sources of finance negatively affects repayment. The frequency of idiosyncratic shocks also negatively impacts repayment performance. The research contributes to the understanding of microfinance repayment dynamics in the context of Assam, highlighting the importance of group-level mechanisms and individual borrower characteristics in determining repayment outcomes.
