Title

Resonant Traditions: The Role of String Musical Instruments in the Folk Songs and Tribal Music of Odisha

Abstract

Abstract This paper explores the cultural, musical, and symbolic significance of string musical instruments in the folk and tribal traditions of Odisha. Drawing on ethnographic accounts, regional festivals, and performance practices, it highlights how these instruments are central to the emotional, ritualistic, and social lives of diverse communities across the state. From instruments like the Tuila, Gopiyantra, and Kendera in the western plains to the Banam and Bhuanga in the tribal belts, the study illustrates how these sound-making tools not only enrich musical expression but also embody cultural memory and identity. The paper argues for a renewed scholarly focus on these under-documented traditions in the face of growing cultural homogenization and loss.
