This study examines the repayment performance of microfinance borrowing groups operating under the joint liability model within the institutional framework of microfinance institutions (MFIs) in Assam. Utilizing field-level data from 187 groups, the analysis employs a Tobit regression model to assess the impact of various socioeconomic and institutional variables on repayment outcomes. The findings indicate that repayment performance is positively influenced by factors such as group size, loan cycle progression, trust in the MFI, peer monitoring, and homogeneity. Conversely, higher loan amounts, increased group age, and greater distance from branch offices are associated with lower repayment rates. These results underscore the critical roles of group dynamics and institutional proximity in sustaining loan recovery. This study contributes to the microfinance literature by providing empirical evidence on the effectiveness of group lending mechanisms and emphasizing the need for policy interventions that strengthen peer accountability and monitoring structures to enhance financial sustainability.
