Title

Indian Nationalism: A Dilemma between Sri Aurobindo Ghosh’s concept of Spiritual Nationalism and Western concept of Nationalism

Abstract

Indian Nationalism: A Dilemma between Sri Aurobindo Ghosh’s concept of Spiritual Nationalism and Western concept of Nationalism Kamal Chandra Barman Assistant Professor Dept. of Political Science M. U. C. Women’s College B. C. Road, Purba Bardhaman West Bengal, India Mail ID: kcbarman.cooch@gmail.com Abstract Nationalism, an ideology which consists of several composite insights like nation, national unity, national interest, national integrity and patriotism etc., has been controlled and maintained by different countries in the globe according to their own way. In case of India, the nature of Nationalism is very complex and dynamics because of its diversity in different fields like religion, language, caste, creed, race sex etc. At the same time factors like impact of capitalism, role of mass media, modern education, socio-cultural history, political and economic infrastructure, traditions and especially individuals who mainly play an important role are very much necessary to understand nationalism. Sri Aurobindo, one of them is the true Indian nationalist who viewed that political liberty is the first step towards nationalism which is only possible through boycott which may be organised, passive and aggressive. His idea of nationalism is spiritual in nature though he was influenced by western concept of nationalism. The objective of the paper is to understand whether his idea of nationalism is different from western concept of nationalism? or Is it a composition of both these two? For that purpose of put forward a descriptive and analytical study of Indian nationalism, a comparative method has been used. At the same time, an attempt has been made to understand what role the spiritual leaders, like Aurobindo, played in the growth of nationalism in India. As he said that nationalism is world religion that has come from God and it is the universal human unity which is possible by creating centralised world state, by creating a loos confederacy and by formulating religion of humanity. So from this point of view he is a true nationalist.
