Title

PROJECT SUMMER INTERNSHIP FOR ENGINEERING STUDENTS: A BOON OR BANE? – A REVIEW

Abstract

The challenges faced by the engineering students these days have been so stiff and multi-factorial. With the mushrooming of engineering institutions across the country, the number of students passing out every year has been very exponential. There is a gross mismatch between what is available and what is actually needed. In view of abundant availability of engineers, the recruiting agencies tend to raise the bar year after year, necessitating the students to explore innovative methods to meet up to the expectations of their employers. Internship is one such innovative programme that offers hands-on experience to the students during their academic career itself. The All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) has come out with stringent guidelines to promote a high-quality education and coordinate and maintain norms high standards in engineering education. It is now mandatory for the students to do compulsory internship before they are offered the bachelor degree. University Grants Commission also offers many innovative online internship programmes that motivate students to take up online internships that are digitally viable. Ministry of Human Resource and Development also motivates students to do internship programmes along with a financial assistance. The purpose of this mini review article is to create highlight the growing need to do internships during their four-year engineering programme. As many students are unaware of the existing AICTE guidelines and policies, this manuscript provides a broader overview of the need for internship, its distinct advantages and the guidelines of AICTE.
