Title

A Study on the Coverage of Africa in Indian Print Media

Abstract

This study aims to examine the coverage given to the African continent beyond the agenda of the India-Africa Summit. The research also attempts to explore the news coverage with regard to third world countries, and calls for a shift from stereotypical representation of other parts of the globe. Content analysis method was used to study two Indian newspapers, the Times of India and The Hindu, for a comparative study. The purposive sampling method was used to select and analyse two years issues for coverage on Africa, and a sub-sampled frame of six months for the coverage of other countries of the world. According to the data collected and analysed, although the India-Africa Summit 2015 was used to frame the space and type of coverage given to Africa, the continent has the same stereotyped image in the Indian print media. The role of correspondents cannot be overemphasized, as they contribute to exploring the nuanced life and experiences of a people to highlight their untold stories of success, progress, happiness, etc.Findings and results:The majority of stories published in the newspapers, especially about Africa, is negative or has a negative tone, importance attached to stories from Africa is much lower than that accorded other countries, Indian print media, just like the one in the West, doesn‘t frequently cover Africa.
