Title

Caste differences in education: occupational stratification and social exclusion in rural India.

Abstract

Caste-based disparities in education continue to influence occupational stratification and perpetuate social exclusion in rural India, significantly impacting marginalized communities. This review paper explores the intricate relationship between caste, educational attainment, and its implications for occupational choices and social mobility. Drawing upon a mixed-methods approach, the study synthesizes insights from quantitative government reports and surveys alongside qualitative findings from interviews and case studies conducted in rural villages. The focus is on the experiences of Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and Other Backward Classes (OBC), highlighting persistent inequalities despite affirmative action policies. Key observations reveal enduring gaps in access to quality education and professional employment for lower caste groups, resulting in entrenched cycles of poverty and marginalization. The paper underscores the urgent need for comprehensive educational reforms and targeted vocational training programs to bridge these disparities and foster social inclusion. It calls for sustained efforts to dismantle systemic barriers and ensure equitable opportunities for all, paving the way toward a more inclusive society.
