Title

AN INVESTIGATIONAL STUDY ON ALTERATION OF PHYSICAL AND STRENGTH PROPERTIES OF BITUMINOUS MIX BY APPLICATION OF IRON WIRE FIBER AS AN ADDITIVE

Abstract

Experiments to incorporate various additives in the bituminous mix with the aim of enhancing the qualitative (physical/chemical) properties have been carried from time to time. These are undertaken with a view to alter the natural properties of the mix and to bring about an overall improvement in the performance of bitumen. The principal objective of this research is to investigate the effect of using low-cost iron wire fiber as a reinforcement to alter the properties of the bituminous mix. Various samples of bituminous mix with varying percentages of fiber content 1%, 2%, 4%, 6% and 9% were prepared and studied. Detailed study with Marshall test results aided in the determination of properties like Marshall characteristics and optimum binder content. After ascertaining of these parameters, tests like Marshall stability test, Cantabro test and Drain-down test were performed. The moisture resistance sensitivity of the mixtures was also measured. The results so obtained indicated a convincing change in the mechanical properties of mixes. Addition of iron wire fiber in the range of 1%-4% enhanced the performance of the mix. Post 4%, air voids were reported to increase which consequently led to a decrease in the bitumen aggregate reaction. Raising the content of iron wire fiber beyond this level (i.e. at 6-9%) lead to durability and stability related problems in the mixture. Thus, utilization of non-conventional additives, in this case, iron wire fiber in the asphaltic concrete may pave way for a new kind of bituminous pavement construction, if the research is pursued further
