Title

SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION AND OCCUPATIONAL STRUCTURE OF TRIBAL POPULATION IN MORIGAON DISTRICT OF ASSAM: A GEOGRAPHICAL ANALYSIS.

Abstract

ABSTRACT : Morigaon district supports a large proportion of tribal population, highly differentiated in terms of ethnic characteristics as well as economic responses to their habitat. They are mainly concentrated in the central part of the district especially in the mouzas of Niz-Ghagua, Morigaon and Tetelia. A high proportion of them depend upon cultivation. Apart from raising agricultural crops, poultry and pig rearing and fishing also contribute a significant proportion to their economy. They are not very much interested in industrial activities. Only small scale cottage industries are popular among the people of this group. A very small proportion of them are engaged in petty business like vegetables, pork supply and supply of some other essential commodities. The engagement in service sector is not very high. Such a situation is certainly a great impediment against the successful implementation of any kinds of plans and programmes for the development and for elevating the poverty. In view of this, an indepth study of the spatial distribution and occupational structure of the tribal population at the micro-level would be of great importance. It is expected that the study will have not only academic value; it will also help the planners to adopt separate plans and programmes for this group of people. Therefore, an attempt has been made in this paper to study the spatial distribution and occupational structure of tribal population in Morigaon district at micro-level. This is done on the basis of both primary as well as secondary data.
