Title

ARC Series Rain Gauge Calibrator

Abstract

The monitoring of hydro meteorological variables for operational and research purposes requires accurate measurement. The reliability of such measurements varies depending on the need to meet different requirements in several sectors, including aviation, agriculture, civil protection, entertainment and weather forecast. In the case of rain gauges, many factors and variables affect the measurement of liquid and solid precipitation in the field. Calibration is a primary tool for quality control and requires suitable infrastructure to perform the tests, and is done by using properly evaluated testing methods and procedures. The current study presents the analysis of a typical calibration system for tipping-bucket rain gauges, in accordance with the recommendations and requirements of both meteorology and metrology. As a result, the uncertainty contribution of each component of the system and an assessment of the resulting overall uncertainty budget are obtained. Tipping bucket rain gauge: Pair of buckets are pivoted under this funnel in such a manner that when one bucket receives 0.25mm of precipitation (rainfall), it tips discharging its rainfall into the container, bringing the other bucket under the funnel. Tipping of the bucket completes an electric circuit causing the movement of the pen to mark on clock driven receiving drum which carries a recorded sheet. These electric pulses generated are recorded at the control room far away from the rain gauge station. The auto rainfall calibration system includes a host machine and automatic calibration software. Firstly water injected into the standard ball should reach the calibrated water volume, and then the water discharge control unit will inject water into rain gauge at a specific flow rate, thereby stimulating different rain intensity of rain gauges and the calibrated data are recorded to determine the deviation of the rain gauge. Calibration is a process of comparing the host instrument with a standard instrument. In earlier days manual calibrators were used to calibrate rain gauges, the intensity of rainfall is controlled using VFD (Variable Frequency Drive). To calibrate rain gauge the host rain gauge is placed in the testing chamber. As we change the intensity of input the out changes gradually. And this change is recorded manually
