Title

DETERMINATION OF AIR POLLUTION FROM AIR QUALITY FILE OF THREE MEGACITIES IN INDIA: A CONTEXTUAL ANALYSIS

Abstract

Abstract: Air pollutants have lots of adverse effect on human health including cardiovascular diseases and respiratory diseases (mainly asthma). In this research work, we have used three megacities (Delhi, Kolkata, Bangalore) air quality index and exceedance factor of air quality file for determination of air pollution based on data from 2018, 2019 & 2020. The data of three pollutants’ parameter (PM2.5, PM10 and CO) are collected from Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB); Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India. The data was taken in yearly basis with once in a month frequency to have 12 observations in a year from CPCB. For the evaluation of pollution level, we have used exceedance factor(EF). EF is directly proportional to the pollution levels. We have noticed that by this contextual analysis of last three years’ data, PM2.5 have shown uneven natures in all cities. In comparison to Bangalore, Delhi is more polluted by PM2.5. Both Delhi and Kolkata are critically polluted but Bangalore is highly polluted by PM2.5. Judging from the perspective of PM10 levels, two cities (Bangalore and Kolkata) fluctuate in polluted levels all year round, but Delhi is always critically polluted. This study also suggests that Delhi has a higher trend to reduce carbon monoxide emissions.

Key Words
