Research Scholar, SCE, Lovely Professional University, Phagwara Abstract: Ponta sahib is an industrial area of district Sirmour in Himachal Pradesh. It connects Uttarakhand and Haryana with Himachal Pradesh. Being an industrial area people are migrating from the nearby areas for employment to Ponta Sahib. Therefore, there is a rapid increase in population of the town and traffic has also increased significantly over the past few years. The increase in traffic cause congestion and reduces capacity of the intersections and roads. Rotary intersections are constructed where two or more roads cross each other and have significant traffic. Rotary intersections are efficient and manage the various traffic congestions satisfactorily as long as the traffic is within the permissible limits. One such roundabouts was constructed at Badripur intersection in 1996. This intersection is now facing a lot of traffic jams because of increased industrial activity and traffic in the town. One weak manual traffic count was made at this intersection to carry out its performance analysis. The traffic volume turning right, left and straight is converted into Passengers Car Units (PCU) per hour as per IRC guideline. The capacity of the Badripur roundabout was found 1678 PCU/hr which is less than the recommended value of 3000 PCU/hr by IRC. Therefor to meet the traffic needs and to decrease the traffic jams at the intersection it is necessary, to redesign the geometrical parameters of the roundabout or construct suitable alternate facility. This project tests the capacity of existing roundabout and provide some alternatives to cater to the needs of increased traffic. Keywords: Intersections, Capacity, Traffic Count, PCU.
