Melodrama and realism in cinema are often considered antithetical to each other. Maternal melodrama, a subset of melodramatic while following the conventions of the melodramatic pole, also incorporates elements of realist cinema, especially in the case of documentaries. This paper argues that 'Tale,s from the Margins'(2006) a documentary by Kavita Joshi works within the realist framework by incorporating melodramatic elements into it. The effectiveness of this realist discourse has in no way diminished the overall effect it has on the spectator.This paper attempts tp place the documentary in the category of minority literature, thereby subverting the bourgeois narrative style of documentary production.
