Title

Effectiveness of activity therapy on Self-esteem of patients with Depression in selected areas

Abstract

Background: Previous research indicated that lowered self-esteem frequently accompanies or became an etiological factor in many psychiatric conditions.1Mentally ill people who experience negative self-appraisals performed badly in the community and were more likely to relapse.2 Patients with depression and low Self-esteem are expected to have a compromised quality of life and poor psychosocial life. Silverstone (2003), using Rosenberg’s Self-esteem scale found 24% of the people with depression had an intermediate level of Self-esteem. However, when compared to other psychiatric conditions, this group of patients had significantly low Self-esteem.4The objectives of the study: 1. To assess the self-esteem of patients with depression before activity therapy in experimental and control groups. 2.To assess the self-esteem of patients with depression after activity therapy in experimental and control groups. 3.To evaluate the effectiveness of activity therapy on Self-esteem of patients with depression before and after activity therapy in control and experimental groups. 4.To associate the Self-esteem scores with selected demographic variables. Hypotheses: H0:-There is no significant effect of activity therapy on Self-esteem of patients with Depression. H1:-There is a significant effect of activity therapy on the Self-esteem of patients with Depression. Research methodology: The Conceptual Framework of the study was based on Hildegard Peplau’s conceptual framework. The study was conducted using a quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group design. In this study, the target population was depressive patients. A nonprobability convenient sampling technique was adopted for this study. From this population 30 in the experimental group and 30 in a control group, depressive patients were selected as subjects of the study. Result: The study findings revealed that activity therapy was effective in the experimental group. Conclusion: The findings demonstrated that activity therapy improves self-esteem.
