COVID-19 is challenging the world with limited amount of vaccine and medical capacity to treat the disease, out of the ordinary global travel restrictions and lockdown orders are causing the most severe disturbance to the global economy. While forbidding the international travel has affected over 90% of the world population, wide-spread restrictions on public gatherings and community mobility, tourism has largely come to an end in 2020- 2021. Impacts on air travel, cruises, and accommodations have become highly distructive. The tourism industry has been massively affected by the spread of coronavirus, as many countries have introduced travel restrictions in an attempt to contain its spread. The paper compares the impacts of COVID-19 and other types of global crises and reconnoiter how the pandemic may change society, the economy, and tourism. It discusses why COVID-19 is an analogue to the ongoing climate crisis, and why there is a need to question the volume growth tourism model advocated by UNWTO, ICAO, CLIA, WTTC and other tourism organizations.
