Title

“A review on Stress Analysis of mechanical components Using Photoelasticity Technique”

Abstract

Photoelasticity is widely used for determining the stresses at a point. A model of transparent material having double refraction properties is cut into the same shape as the prototype whose stresses are desired. The model is subjected to external load, which is a simulation of the actual load on a prototype. The loaded specimen is then visually observed against a polarized light in equipment called the polar scope. A brilliant pattern of colored fringes is observed when polarized light is employed. These fringe patterns narrate the internal stress situation in the body. By applying stress-optic law these fringe patterns can be translated in terms of stresses due to applied load. The evaluation of stresses at free boundaries is very simple but separation of stresses inside the model is time consuming and less precise.
