An attempt was made to study the antioxidant activity of the fruit and seed of Zanthoxylum rhetsa in terms of its free radical scavenging activity and Total Phenol Content in aqueous and alcoholic medium. In the DPPH assay, the aqueous extract of the fruit showed IC50 value of 6.693 ± 1.327mg/mL and the seed showed IC50 value of 27.02 ±1.095mg/mL, whereas in alcohol it showed IC50 of 16.488 ± 1.825mg/mL and 41.12 ±3.284mg/mL respectively. Total Phenolic content was measured using Folin-Ciocalteu reagent and was found to be 15.53 ± 1.138 mgGAE/g and 1.06 ± 0.567 mgGAE/g for the aqueous extract of fruit and seed, while it was 12.17 ± 0.658 mgGAE/g and 8.81 ± 0.925 mgGAE/g for their ethanolic extract. The free radical scavenging activity of the spice was comparable to that of the standards Butylated Hydroxy Toluene (BHT) and Gallic acid.
