Title

Design and optimization of Automobile propeller shaft with composite materials using FEM Analysis

Abstract

This project deals with the Replacement of conventional automobile propeller shaft by suitable composite material. Conventionally used shaft material is generally Steel of SM45C grade, weight of steel is grater if compared with composite material. for increasing the fundamental bending natural frequency the propeller shaft is usually manufacture in two pieces. The two piece drive shaft consist of three universal joints .Composite material propeller shaft have grater natural bending frequency. So composite material single piece propeller shaft is of much less weight than steel propeller shaft. In project weight optimization and analysis of propeller shaft is done using finite element method. Analysis found that the weight of conventional steel shaft material can be reduce by replacing it with composite material shaft .The overall objective of this work is to control the power loss using composite material. Composite materials have high strength and stiffness and they can also withstand high temperature.
