Title

FLIPKART EN ROUTE TO SUSTAINABLE CONSUMPTION: A CASE STUDY ON BUSINESS ETHICS

Abstract

Purpose: This case study aims to help management students to relate their theoretical knowledge on business ethics and corporate social responsibility with actual happenings in organisations. This case study is a good example of how businesses are supporting a larger cause other than profits. It proves that business ethics is not an oxymoron, and that ethics and business can complement each other. Design/Methodology/Approach: This case study is qualitative in nature and literature has been sourced from the internet and books on business ethics Finding: Flipkart India could successfully transform its image as a socially responsible organisation that was genuinely committed to the protection of the environment. Research implications: The study deals with how Flipkart accepted the fact that its operations contributed to the increase in plastic footprint and how it took responsibility and transformed itself to an environmentally responsible company. Practical implications: This case study can be used for both graduate and undergraduate management students and this will help them believe in the concept of business ethics and how ethics has become an essential component of organisations and how ethics can positively impact business brands. Social implications: This study is socially relevant as it shows how organisations have concern for people and environment in addition to profits. This case study proves why its necessary to have ethics in business and it also justifies that ethics in business is not a myth and having ethics in business is a long-term investment that creates goodwill and impacts a large number of stakeholders in more ways than one. Originality/value: This study is of value to students as it makes them more sensitive towards business impact on environment and it makes them understand that the triple bottom line approach is interconnected, and all the three aspects of triple bottom line are essential and one cannot survive without the other.
