Authors

Abstract

The birth weight of an infant is the single most important determinant of its chances of survival, healthy growth and development. One of the factors contributing to infant mortality is low birth weight. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY 1. To assess the pre-existing knowledge score of themothers regarding care of LBW newborns. 2. To assess the post test knowledge score of the mothers regarding care of LBW newborns. 3. To find out the association between post-test knowledge score and selected demographic variables. 4. To find out significant difference between pre test and post test knowledge scores of mothers regarding care of LBW newborns. METHODS An evaluative research approach with pre-experimental design was used for the study. The study was conducted at selected hospital in jalgaon cityt. The sample comprised of 60 mothers of LBW newborns. Sample was selected by using purposive sampling technique. Formal written permission from hospital authorities was obtained prior to data collection process. Data was collected using a self structured questioner. Data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. RESULTS The results of this study showed that highest percentage (40%) of mothers were in the age group of 22-25 years. Majority (60%) of the mothers were multiparous. Most (56.70%) of the newborns weighed 1500-2000 gms. Knowledge score of mothers regarding care of LBW newborns showed that the pre-test knowledge score with the pre-test mean of 11.05, whereas the post-test score with a mean of18.93. The mean difference (7.88) between the post-test and pre-test knowledge scores was found to be significant (t=17.33, p < 0.05). This showed that the structured teaching programme was highly effective in improving the knowledge of mothers on care of LBW newborns. There was no significant association between the pre-test knowledge score and selected demographic variables like mother’s age in years, educational status, obstetrical history(parity).
