Title

ASSESSMENT OF RESIDUAL CHLORINE CONTENT AT DISTANT LOCATION OF AMRAVATI CITY

Abstract

The main objective of the research is to study the effect of chlorine depletion in intermitted municipal water supply networks. This paper presents a methodology to find out the residual chlorine concentration at various locations in simple branch network. Chloroscope was used to monitor the behavior of the residual chlorine in water distribution system under the action of intermittent supply. The measurements of residual chlorine in the drinking water network at 23 sampling points were conducted. Results show that 2 out of 23 sampling points which is farthest in the water supply network have residual chlorine concentrations lower than the recommended values given by The Indian Standard Code. To study daily variation at farthest end 144 samples were taken from 2 ESR and 2consumer location. From study it has been found that there is effect of distance on the residual chlorine decaying in intermitted water distribution system. A significant correlation between the distance and the decrease of chlorine concentration is shown, from 2 mg/l at source it is depleting 0.7 mg/l after 3.95 km followed by 0.4 mg/l at 8.72 km ultimately reaching min value 0.2 mg/l at 12.32 km, respectively. The monitoring is important to the water and public health relevant institutions to improve the public water supply sector as 0.1mg/l residual chlorine which is not acceptable according to Indian Standard code is also found out at consumer tap water.
