Acquisition and dissemination of knowledge is one of the primary duties of the followers of Islam. Muslim community has its presence across the globe and has taken notable initiatives for propagation of knowledge as early as the 7th century A.D. As soon as the Muslims entered India they founded many learning centers in many parts of the country. During medieval period several small and big learning centers, called Maktabs and Madrasas were established. These accommodated people of all communities. Under the British regime, in the Madras Presidency many educational associations, societies were founded to establish primary schools, high schools and colleges for educating the masses. The higher educational institutions started by the Muslims of Tamil Nadu have made significant contributions. The research paper aims at studying the contribution of Muslims to higher education in Tamil Nadu in a brief manner.
