(Olympic Games movement in Manipur began to gather steam right from the 1970s of the last century when Nongthombam Maipak Singh won overall 5th position in international body building 1972 held at Paris France. Though a non Olympic Games, his achievement became a stepping stone for the youths of Manipur. It began to produce Olympians from 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, USA and till Tokyo Olympics, it has 19 athletes, so far including 3 two timers, one Team captain and one three timers. Government of India honoured sports achievers with prestigious rewards every year. Among the national achievers, Manipur has produced 19 Arjuna Awards, 2 with Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Awards (Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award), 5 Padma Shree Awards, 1 Padma Bhusan, 1 Padmavibhusan, 1 Dronacharya Award, 1 Dhyan Chand Award, winners, till date)
