Title

PRIVATE SECTOR CREDIT AND ECONOMIC GROWTH IN NIGERIA: A MODEL OF ARDL BOUNDS TEST

Abstract

ABSTRACT: The study investigated the impact of credit to the private sector on economic growth in Nigeria from 1990-2020. Credit to the private sector (CPS) and real gross domestic product (RGDP) serve as exogenous and endogenous variables respectively. The autoregressive distribution lag (ARDL) bounds test was applied in analysis aided by the E-views12 statistical package. The results revealed that credit to the private sector had a positive and significant impact on real gross domestic product in Nigeria, and had short-run and long-run relationships. Based on the findings, researchers recommend that monetary authority should promote monetary policy instruments that will enhance the sectoral allocation of credit to the private sector for sustainable economic growth in Nigeria, the central bank of Nigeria should introduce discounted e-wallet specifically for private sector credit administration; this would harness the benefit of the e-naira regime, direct access and utilization of credit to the sector especially to the real sector.
