Title

''EFFECT S OF INDOOR AIR POLLUTION ON CHILDREN: CASE STUDY ON RAJPURSONARPUR MUNICIPALITY, SOUTH 24 PARGANAS, W.B.(INDIA)''

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Indoor air pollution (IAP) is a vital problem in the present day in rural, urban and suburban area.Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) declared that indoor air pollution is 2.5 times worse than outdoor pollution level.IAP caused by biomass fuel use and traditional cooking stoves is a global threat, particularly for women and children.Children are one of the most vulnerable groups to indoor air pollution. As the children are growing rapidly, they have higher resting metabolic rate and higher rate of oxygen consumption per unit body weight than adults. In addition to an increased need for oxygen relative to their size, children have narrower airway than adults. The respiratory system is a primary target of indoor air pollutants resulting in a wide range of acute and chronic effects.IAP also impacts academic performance of children by lowering their concentration levels and increasing absenteeism due to asthma and allergies along with weakening lungs and reducing immunity, making children more susceptible to infectious airborne illness like cold and flu.Indoor air pollution also impacts the development of endocrine glands, nervous and immune system of children. So concentrating on the indoor environment is most important for the children as they spend as much as 90% of their time indoors. This research paper is an overview of the major sources of IAP exposure in households and associated health effects in children of the slum areas of Rajpur-Sonarpur Municipality.
