Title

ASSESS THE KNOWLEDGE LEVEL OF STAFF NURSES REGARDING PREVENTION OF NOSOCOMIAL INFECTION IN PAEDIATRIC UNITS, AGARTALA, TRIPURA.

Abstract

Hospital acquired infections or nosocomial infections are those infections which developed within the hospital or produced by cross infections from one patient to another from doctors, nurses, visitors, attendant or other hospital staff during hospital stay. A wide variety of microorganism can be transmitted in healthcare setting, including bacteria, virus, fungi and mycoplasmas. They most commonly affect the urinary tract, lower respiratory tract, surgical wounds, skins and the blood stream. Data collection was performed in the paediatric units of IGM Hospital, Agartala. Using convenient sampling technique the staff nurses were informed and called to the paediatric unit. The structured interview using structured knowledge questionnaire was carried out to collect data regarding baseline variables and knowledge on prevention of nosocomial infection in paediatric units.1 The overall assessment of knowledge level indicated that 46.15% had moderately adequate knowledge and 15.38% had inadequate knowledge whereas 38.46% of staff nurses had adequate level of knowledge. The mean knowledge score of staff nurses regarding overall knowledge was 34.404 at 0.05 level of significance. A significant association was found between the knowledge level of staff nurses and the variables such as age in years gender, education and monthly income, the calculated ×2 values were higher than the tabulated value at p< 0.05 level of significance. Taking care of children with nosocomial infection can be challenging, rewarding and fulfilling. Families need to understand what to do when their child demonstrates sign and symptoms of infection. Timely management helps in prevention of complications.
