This paper aims to throw light on the transition of traditional woman into a New Woman in the selected fictions by Nayantara Sahgal, Bharati Mukherjee, Jhumpa Lahiri and Easterine Kire and shows how through the women characters of their fictions give a voice and individual identity in the family as well as society, How these New Women of modern time rejects the existing traditions and social set-up and become more conscious of her emotional needs and strives for self-fulfillment. Through the main protagonists of the selected novels, we can see how they succeeded in breaking the conventional setting of marriage and remained unmarried for the rest of their life. This paper has attempted to present the women's struggle for freedom and self-identity and the emergence of new woman in the selected fictions of famous writers of India.
