Image classification, image segmentation, pattern recognition, and image retrieval are based on feature extraction. Texture is the characteristic of a set of pixels that form an image, which is applied in many images as an important feature[1]. Analyzing texture helps detect important portions of the image. LBP is an efficient operator to recognize the pixels in the image. This paper provides a review on LBP and its variations. The aim of this review is to illustrate effectiveness of LBP and its variants in the field of image processing. LBP effectively preserves the essential visual elements of an image, as it is invariant to changes in light.
