Title

INFLUENCE OF LINDANE ON HAEMATOLOGICAL AND ANTIOXIDANT ENZYME INDICES IN TISSUES OF LABEO ROHITA

Abstract

Background: Pesticides are a pivotal tool for agriculture to safeguard crops, grains, and human belongings from pests and also prevents diseases but it can enter into an aquatic ecosystem as a whole or in residual form through bioaccumulation and leads to a major threat for aquatic biota. Objectives: Our present study is aimed to elucidate the effect of Lindane on Haematological indices and antioxidant system of carp fish Labeo rohita. 1/5th sub-lethal concentration of Lindane is 1.56mg/L (7.63mg/L for 96hrs) was used for the toxicity experiment. Blood samples are used to analyze for the haematological total erythrocyte count (TEC), total leukocyte count (TLC), total haemoglobin count (Hb), and Packed cell volume (PCV or Hct), and tissue samples are used for lipid peroxidation and antioxidant enzymes (CAT, SOD, GPx) of Lindane on Labeo rohita for over of 45 days exposure period. Results are discussed and highlighted with recent literature. Material and Methods: Acute toxicity of an organochlorine insecticide is evaluated by their presence in aquatic organisms through accumulation. The LC50 of Lindane to Labeo rohita was identified as 1.60 mg/L for 96h. The experimental fish treated with sub lethal concentration of Lindane over an exposure period of 3, 7, 14, 30, and 45 days. Results: Lindane showed a significant decrease in total erythrocyte count (-46.18%), total haemoglobin content (-36.60%), and haematocrit (-31.64%) and developed a significant hike in the total leucocyte count (57.25%) compared to the control group. Lindane also generated a gradual and significant (P<0.05) increase in Lipid Peroxidation and antioxidant enzymes like GST, GPx, SOD, XOD and whereas CAT activity is decreased gradually throughout the study period. Conclusion: This present study deduced that even at sub-lethal concentration level of Lindane is catastrophic to Labeo rohita like aquatic culture organisms and applications of Lindane close to bodies of water lead to aquatic life, then to the humans.
