Title

Restoration Of Degradation Land & Watershed Management

Abstract

Land being the major resource among all the other resources present in India comprises water, soil, flora and fauna involving the total eco system. The productivity of every activity here indirectly depends upon the preservation and improvement of the land. With the growing population, the quality of land is being compromised while meeting the human needs. Land is used for various purposes such as urban settlement, dams, highways, plantation of non-native trees and so on, without concerning about proper provisions for drainage, and improper agricultural practices. This has caused some serious levels of land degradation, which leads to soil erosion, loss of soil fertility, destruction of species habitat and biodiversity, pollution of underground water, depletion of water table and etc. At its worst, land degradation can result in the loss of soil fertility, increase in soluble heavy metals due to pollution and endangering human and animal life So this current study aims at restoration of degraded land by integrated watershed management. Which will achieve: 1. Natural biodiversity regeneration & land restoration 2. Increase in land productivity 3. Sustainable development through agroforestry 4. Lowering pollution of water and soil 5. Replenishing water table Watershed management has proved to be very beneficial for water conservation over these past years and we aim to use this technique to improve land quality as well. Analysis tools like GIS software and remote sensing equipment have proved to be very useful in such types of project. The present research work is carried out in Mumbai and especially focuses on the city’s Aarey forest, which is known for its rich biodiversity, but as per our researches the quality of the land is as bad as a barren land due to non-native plant species that serves no purpose in enhancing and regulating the land quality, also the unscientific use of land has lowered the ground water levels all over Aarey. This work is concerned with various maps of Aarey forest, Mumbai. These maps are prepared by using topo-sheets of Mumbai city and the software like Q-GIS 9.1. The maps of this project include the drainage pattern, contour map, elevation map and land use/ land cover map. Depending upon these maps, three suitable sites for watershed management plan are proposed in Aarey forest, Mumbai.
