Title

Pharmacognostical and HPTLC Fingerprint analysis of Pterocarpus santalinus Linn.- Heart Wood in in Chloroform extract

Abstract

Pterocarpus santalinus Linn. is a well-known plant species belonging to the family Fabaceae and it has mostly known for its high economic and commercial trade values and it is also called Red sandalwood or Red sanders which is endemic to India. It is considered as one of the most valuable species and its illegal harvest is a key threat. Many important bioactive Phyto- compounds have been extracted and identified from the heartwood of P. santalinus. These bioactive constituents can act as antioxidants, enzyme inhibitors, inducers, inhibitors of receptor activities and inhibitors of gene expression, etc., Especially Traditional systems for medicine viz; Unani uses Heartwood of Red sandal as Medicine for the cure of many disorders such as Cardiac weakness, Palpitation, Diarrhoea, Burning micturation with the action of Febrifuge, Blood purifier, Cardiac tonic etc., “Sandal surkh” has been included in the Unani Pharmacopoeia of India in vol – V Part – I . The present study aims to explore the pharmacognostical features along with HPTLC fingerprinting analysis of the Heart-wood of Pterocarpus santalinus L in chloroform extract in two different wavelengths viz., 254 nm and 366 nm to solve the Threat.
