Artist Somnath Hore’s career graph is fairly chequered and is entangled with the history of the Indian nation. The works of his marks those moments of crises like famine and questions of human rights and human distresses. They also pass through the colonial as well as the post-colonial period. He straddled different mediums of expression with ease and as a result became a very effective teacher apart from being a very innovative graphic artist and sculptor. This essay is a take on the career of Somnath Hore, on the occasion of his centenary year. The essay is an effort in showing the ancillary areas of focus in Somnath Hore’s oeuvre. This passes through the various stages of his career, his actions and thoughts, and maps the evolution of his ideas.
