Title

A study to assess the effectiveness of STP on knowledge regarding selected obstetrical emergencies among nursing students at Shimla Nursing College

Abstract

Obstetrical emergencies are health problems that are life threatening for pregnant women and their babies. Obstetrical emergencies may arise at any time during pregnancy, labor and birth. The most common obstetrical emergencies are prolonged labour, obstructed labour, postpartum haemorrhage, pregnancy- induced hypertension, miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, abruption placenta, placenta previa, shoulder dystocia and amniotic fluid embolism etc. The aim of the study was to assess the Knowledge of nursing students regarding selected obstetrical emergencies. A Quantitative research approach was used. Pre Experimental Non- Randomized one group pre- test post- test design was used to conduct a research study. Non probability convenient sampling technique was used for selecting the sample and the Sample size was 60. Structured Knowledge Questionnaires was used to collect the data regarding selected obstetrical emergencies among nursing students. The result of the study shows that the mean value of post- test knowledge scores 24.47 was significantly higher than the mean value of pre- test knowledge scores 17.77 as evident from ‘t’ test value 32.92 at (P= 0.00) at 0.05 level of significance. No significant association found between the post- test knowledge among nursing students regarding selected obstetrical emergencies with any of selected demographic variables. This study concluded that structured teaching programme was effective to increase knowledge regarding selected obstetrical emergencies.
