The Bodo community of North-East India is demographically regarded as the highest and largest group among the different indigenous communities in the region. It is appreciable that Bodos have their own religion (indigenous faith) called Bathouism, which is closely related to and originated from their lived world and the worldview. Bathou is their traditional religion where “Bathou Bwrai” or “Obonglaori” is recognized as their supreme God or deity – formless, eternal and creator of five gross elements. Through the Bathou religion, Bodo people collectively practice various rituals, ceremonies, and religious festivals to lead a meaningful life. All these shape the social, cultural, and economic life of the Bodos. There are significant philosophical thoughts underlying the Bathou religion where this proposed project plans to investigate. The religious thoughts touch upon metaphysics, ontology and ethics. The proposed project shall focus on some of the important religious aspects and concepts like Bathou, mysticism, spirituality, Gwthar (purity), etc.
