Rapid urbanization has caused tremendous increase in population of metro cities in India. This has led to ever increase in problems like demand for housing, traffic congestion creating adverse impact on the environment. Traffic congestion has also increased the travel time causing rise in stress levels of the commuters. The characteristic of City plays the important role to analyze the traffic congestion problems. The infrastructural development alone cannot solve the traffic problems in the metro cities with ever increasing travel demand. It is also required to strengthen the public transport system to achieve the modal shift from private to public transport. This paper reveals the study of characteristics and trip patterns of Pune City. Also, to study the existing public transport scenarios and the registered vehicles in the Pune city causing increase in traffic congestion.
