Abstract Piper betel L. is the leaf of an evergreen, perennial vine of the Piperaceae family. In the present investigation, an attempt has been made to study the antioxidant efficiency in the form of DPPH radical quenching using piper betel (L.). The ethanolic extract of betel leaf (piper betel Linn.) of an indigenous climber plant antioxidant activity was investigated. The betel leaves were collected from Madurai region Tamilnadu. In vitro antioxidant activity was estimated using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity assay. Phytochemical investigation confirmed the presence of bioactive ingredients in the extract of betel leafs. Similar test are also carried out for areca nut, but answered lesser number of phytochemical components. Betel leaves are rich in many nutrients like water, energy, protein, fats, fiber, calcium, iron etc., and the antioxidants present are flavonoids, tannins, saponins alkaloids etc,.
