Title

Analysis of Spatial and Temporal Variation in Surface Water Quality of The Stretch of River Damodar from Dishergarh to Burdwan Town, West Bengal

Authors

Abstract

Multivariate statistical technique i.e., Cluster analysis and different statistical techniques were applied to assess spatial and temporal variations in water quality of the stretch of river Damodar from Dishergarh to Burdwan town, West Bengal, over a period of seven years (2014–2020) using 20 parameters at 10 different monitoring sites (16,800 observations). Heirarchical CA grouped the 12 months into three periods (cluster 1, 2 & 3) and classified 10 monitoring sites into three groups (cluster 1, 2 & 3) based on similar water quality characteristics and pollution (natural and anthropogenic) sources. Moreover, after running Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient on the water quality dataset with season, it is observed that all the selected parameters except Cl–, COD, F. Coli, Na, SO4-2, TA, T. Coli, and TDS have seasonal influence, but in relation to monitoring stations, except for F. Coli and T. Coli, all the selected parameters were significantly influenced by geographical location because of variation in human activities over the space. Thus, the study shows the utility of statistical tools for evaluating complicated water quality datasets and understanding temporal and spatial variations, both of which are important for water quality management.
