Non-communicable diseases, which account for a large part of mortality and morbidity in India, remain a major concern. Population shifts, lifestyle changes, and the increased rate of urbanization are the major factors contributing to a tilt towards noncommunicable diseases. Currently, there is no systematic collection of data on noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in India, and it is not of an adequate quality or coverage. In reducing the burden of non-communicable diseases, health care workers lacking in training and primary care providers with inadequate knowledge and skills have posed significant barriers. These issues have been exacerbated by poorly defined roles of various health sectors, such as public, private, and voluntary sectors. Effective control of the growing prevalence of NCDs can be achieved by empowering the community and making public health personnel, free health care, and social insurance available.
