Title

A Study of Merger of State Bank of India with its Associate Banks and Bharatiya Mahila Bank - Financial Ratio Analysis

Abstract

Merger and Acquisitions is a vital tool for the growth and expansion in Banking Industry. They encourage Banks to gain global reach and better synergy and allow Banks for the survival of the weak Banks by merging in to the larger Banks. Majority of the Indian Banking sectors face a main challenge of Non-Performing Assets (NPA’s). In this study, the effect of Merger and Acquisitions in the Indian Banking Sector specifically the State Bank of India(SBI) after the merger (2017) with its five Associate Banks State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur( SBBJ),State Bank of Mysore(SBM),State Bank of Travancore (SBT), State Bank of Hyderabad(SBH),State Bank of Patiala(SBP), Bhartiya Mahila Bank (BMB) has been analysed. The purpose of this paper is to explore various motives of merger in the Indian Banking Sector. It compares the pre and post-merger financial performance with the help of financial parameters. The present study show that performance of State Bank of India (SBI) in terms of profitability, liquidity and Return on Investments, NPA addressable areas. The financial Statements of State Bank of India (SBI) for 8 years (FY 2013-14 TO FY 2020-21) were used for the analysis. The performance is found satisfactory before merger came into force, then condition has been unfavourable in the initial years following merger and then subsequently improved and performance was much better.
