Title

The Effect of Pre-Processing Techniques applied on Forensic Bite Mark Images

Abstract

Now a days, Bite mark investigation plays a vital area in forensic image processing, and is treated as a common way of dental proof offered in assisting criminal cases. More usually than not, pre-processing is used to conduct steps that will reduce the complexity and increase the accuracy of the applied algorithm in forensic image processing. This paper presents the pre-processing steps that are used to improve the forensic image bite mark for further processing. Initially Median Filter is applied to remove noises by smoothening the image. Succeeding Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE) is applied to improve the contrast of the image. Then the black-hat operation (bottom-hat filter or black top-hat filter) on the image is used to enhance dark objects of interest in a bright background. Lastly in-painting process is used to reconstruct the missing parts of image and to remove unwanted objects from the image. These pre-processing steps followed improves the forensic bite mark image features that are important for further processing.
