Title

'Effect of Planned Health Teaching on Knowledge Regarding Remedial Measures on Dysmenorrhea Among the Adolescent Girls in Selected Colleges'

Abstract

Abstract : Background: It is estimated that more than half of all women in adolescence age suffer from dysmenorrhea and it often interferes with their daily physical and emotional aspects. It is the leading cause of short-term school absenteeism and is associated with a negative impact on academic and daily activities. The period of adolescence for a girl is a period of physical and psychological preparation for safe motherhood. As the direct reproducers of future generations, the health of adolescent girls influences not only their own health, but also the health of the future population. Almost a quarter of India's population comprises of girls below 20 years. One of the major physiological changes that take place in adolescent girls is the onset of menarche, which is often associated with problems of irregular menstruation, excessive bleeding, and dysmenorrhea. Of these, dysmenorrhea is one of the common problems experienced by many adolescent girls.1Adolescence is a time of moving from the immaturity of childhood into the maturity of adulthood. Period of life from puberty to adulthood characterized by marked physiological changes, development of sexual feelings, efforts toward the construction of identity, and a progression from concrete to abstract though.2 The adolescent care provider's role is to explain the pathophysiology of dysmenorrhea to every adolescent female, address any concern that the patient has about her menstrual period, and review effective treatment options for dysmenorrhea with the patient.3 Material & Methods: A pre-experimental one-group pre-test post-test design to assess the effect of planned health teaching on knowledge regarding remedial measures on dysmenorrhea among the adolescent girls in selected colleges. The sample size was 100. A Non-Probability Purposive Sampling Technique was used for this study. Results: Analysis was done using inferential and differential statistics. Researcher applied paired t-test for the effect of planned health teaching on knowledge of adolescence girls regarding remedial measures on dysmenorrhea. Average knowledge score in pretest was 9.7 which was 12.9 in posttest. T-value for this test was 10.6 with 99 degrees of freedom. Corresponding p-value was small (less than 0.05), the null hypothesis was rejected. It is evident that the knowledge among the adolescent girls significantly improved after planned health teaching regarding remedial measures on dysmenorrhea.
