Afsanteen (Artemisia absinthium) is commonly known as absinth in English. Traditional systems of medicine like Unani and Ayurveda have been using it from centuries. It belongs to a useful group of aromatic medicinal plants. It is a perennial herb found in Kashmir, mountainous districts of India, Nepal, Europe and North America. In Unani system of medicine Afsanteen is used in chronic fevers, hepatobiliary disorders, menstrual disorders, gastrointestinal diseases etc. Phytochemical studies show that Afsanteen contains essential oils, active principles like absinthin, artabsin, artabsinolides A, B and C etc. Recent experimental and clinical trials reveal that Afsanteen possesses activity like anti-oxidant, antibacterial, antiprotozoal, antimalarial, antidepressant etc.
