Title

Experimental study on early strength test self -compacting concrete using Silica Fume

Abstract

A study carried out to develop self-compacting concrete and optimization of dose of viscosity modifying agent or superplasticizer in self compacting concrete with the replacement of 5 % of cement powder with supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) here Silica fume is used. Cement content is partially 5% replaced by silica fume and early strength behaviour of self-compacting concrete was observed at optimum dose of superplasticizer to get results. As this practice of using SCMs can be very effective in management of industrial by-products like silica fume, metakolin, GGBS etc. Different plasticizer dose with change in water-cement ratios were taken in trials and to study the flowability of concrete. To achieve the desired results as per EFNARC (2005) guidelines various tests for fresh properties like slum flow ,V-funnel and L-box were done and for hardened properties compressive strength, split-tensile strength and flexural strength tests were performed. The results of V-funnel, slum flow, and L-box were correlated decrease in viscosity was observed to overcome this more superplasticizer was needed. Their were increament in hardened properties of concrete when silica fume was used with cement. In general the strength silica fume was found higher than normal self-compacting concrete but there will be need to increase in plasticizer dose.
