Title

A Study of the Postmodern Audience and their Apathy Towards Violent Imagery in New Media

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to understand the kind of effect violent images have on the postmodern audience. The study aims to establish a relationship between the increasing depiction of violent images in new-media with the apathy and desensitization the modern audience face as a consequence. To collect relevant data, the research design included administering a structured questionnaire to the sample which was selected using simple random sampling. The research findings indicate that the increasing rise in the dissemination of violent and graphic imagery has desensitized the OTT and social media audience towards violent images. The findings also suggest that it is the unregulated nature of new media platforms and the audience’s need to obtain uncensored information and stories that has led to the increase in rise of violent imagery. The limitations in this study that could be addressed in future research are that as opposed to the survey method employed, experimentation and interviews as tools of data collection can provide richer and more in-depth data on the topic, the researcher could not employ these methods due to time constraints and further restrictions that come with conducting a study amidst a Covid 19 Pandemic. However, apart from adding to the limited literature on the desensitization of the audience due to violent images especially in new-media, this study is also a helpful tool for policy makers who aim to regulate violent images on media platforms. The data collected supports the theoretical structure, a further validity of the research can be measured by its success in establishing a causal relationship between the variables.
