Title

EFFECTS OF CURRENT HARMONICS ON ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS

Abstract

The purpose of this work is to design and construct a Shunt Active Power Filter (SAPF) in order to improve the power quality of current power systems. In today's power system, several power electronics-based loads and controllers are employed. In addition to various additional advantages, these power electronics-based loads and controllers introduce nonlinearity and harmonics into the system. As a result, the voltage and current waveforms are distorted, and power quality worsens. Passive filters are frequently used to resolve concerns about power quality. This technique, on the other hand, can only give set compensation and is rather substantial. Active power filters (APFs) are a suitable option for enhancing the power quality of contemporary power systems since they may be used as current and voltage sources to balance voltage and current harmonics, as well as provide reactive power support. The purpose of this work is to create a voltage source-based SAPF to address the power quality issue. An instantaneous power theory control approach is used to create the control signals. In the instantaneous power theory, the oscillating components of real and reactive powers are employed to create the reference current. Furthermore, VSI compensates for switching losses by providing actual power. A hysteresis current controller is used to get the reference current for the current controller. Because of its strong dynamic responsiveness, the hysteresis current controller can track and correct for continually fluctuating current harmonics. The suggested system model and control mechanism will be implemented using the MATLAB/Simulink platform. Two scenarios were evaluated in this study: one with SAPF and one without SAPF.
