The main aim of paper is to focus on the rural financial system of the economy and role of SHGs in social empowerment in Punjab. It highlights the district – wise progress of SHGs and bank- wise cumulative progress of 35 banks in Punjab including 22 public sector banks, 9 private sector banks, 3 regional banks and 1 co-operative bank. Nearly 3.40 million SHGs have been provided with a bank credit of over Rs. 2223.30 crore by March 2008. The data of SHGs has been taken from secondary sources e.g. regional head offices of banks, journals magazines and official websites etc. The study concludes that progress of SHGs of Public Sector banks have contributed a lot towards upliftment of poor or financially excluded people..
